Seems that a study came out with results back in March of this year showing that steeping tea in fluoridated water puts us at risk of “damaged bones, discolored teeth and soft tissue harm.” That doesn’t sound like good news to me. Of course, ever since my little brother had discolored teeth from the big push to put fluoride in our water way back when, I have not been a fan.
If you consume black tea daily, then having fluoride in your water just means you are overdosing. Although amounts of tea were not given, the Food and Chemical Toxicology study came up with these results:
4.5 mg/L - black tea
1.8 mg/L - green tea
0.5 mg/L - white tea
Further on in our source, they state that brewed teas can contain up to 6 mg/L of flouride depending upon the amount of dry tea used. Since the ADA says that 3 mg of fluoride for women and 4 mg of fluoride for men is enough, it sure looks like you don’t want to add more with your water. If you love your tea and live in an area where the water has flouride, added or not, you had better look into some bottled water. Now all I have to do is check to see if the bottled water I buy has fluoride. Sheesh!
Our source goes on to list a few examples out of the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry article “Fluoride and Tea” of people who found out their tea habit was causing all kinds of health problems. These included skeletal fluorosis leading to weakened bones, joint pain, and osteomalacia (bone softening). Very different from all the health benefits we usually associate with drinking tea.
