No Link Between Caffeine in Tea and Breast Cancer

May 28th, 2008 · No Comments

The title says it all. During a 22 year study of women in what is called the Nurses Health Study, 85,987 women between the ages of 30 and 55 (at least when the study started) were assessed by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health. Of the 5,272 women who did develop breast cancer, no association was found between consumption of caffeine and the cancer. This comparison was between those who drank four or more cups a day versus those who drank less than one cup per day, coffee or tea. This included not only coffee and tea but soft drinks and chocolate. Thank goodness our chocolate and tea are safe.

Something they did find, which of course will need to lead to more study and research, is that with post menopausal women, there is a modest decrease in risk for women with the highest intake of caffeine compared to those with the lowest. Sounds like a good a reason as any to just keep on drinking that tea - “It’s for my health.”

One thing that was not addressed, as far as I could find, was the type of tea drunk. Of course, we know that tea has less caffeine than coffee but they didn’t seem to address that. At any rate, no need to worry about breast cancer from your drinking habits now, ladies.
