In the arena of “needs more research”, a French study found that women who drink three cups or more of tea a day may be protected from heart attacks and strokes. No mention in our source was made of whether this is for a specific type of tea but given the aspects that follow, I think you will see they were just asking about general tea use. Unfortunately, seems there was no benefit found for men, at least in this study.
The plaque in the carotid artery of over 2600 men and almost 4000 women was measured as part of this study. The average age of the participants was 73.
Plaque was found in 45% of non tea drinkers, 42.5% of those who only drank one or two cups per day and all the way down to only 33.7% in those reporting a three plus cup per day drinking habit.
But it looks like the study did not take into account any other factors such as smoking, hormone replacement therapy, whether they were already suffering vascular disease or diet just to name a few things. Guess that does go to show that lots more research is needed.
But in the meantime, if the caffeine doesn’t get you jittery or the acid upset your stomach, then three cups a day is a good mark to shoot for. Who knows? You could be lowering your chances of having a heart attack or suffering a stroke.
