In India, the Union Minister of State for Commerce, said that the orthodox tea grown in the Nilgiris region would get a geographical indicator and a special logo like Darjeeling tea has now. This event is planned to happen within the next four or five months. This will give the tea from the region its own special identity. There are 60,000 small growers of tea within the Nilgiris region.
This will presumably demand a call against those who produce teas which are not up to standards as the Nilgiris name would now mean something specific. In fact, there is a call to move to using organic methods to cultivate the tea. That should bring some type of premium in the world market, in my humble opinion. It appears that efforts are being made to market this tea to Egypt, Pakistan and Iran.
